How is AI really affecting jobs today?
AI is clearly changing the workforce, but the picture is more nuanced than simple job loss.
On the downside, there have been notable cuts. In the first quarter of 2026, the tech industry reportedly laid off 80,000 workers globally, with about half of those layoffs linked to AI or automation. Goldman Sachs economists estimate that AI is currently reducing U.S. payroll growth by around 16,000 jobs per month in AI-exposed industries.
However, that’s only part of the story. According to the World Economic Forum, AI is expected to affect 92 million jobs globally by 2030, but at the same time could help create about 170 million new roles. That’s a projected net gain of 80 million jobs over the next several years.
Many of these new roles are emerging directly around AI itself—such as AI trainers, governance and compliance specialists, and prompt engineers—as organizations look for people who can help them use AI responsibly.
The bottom line: AI is reshaping and rebalancing work rather than simply eliminating it. The opportunity lies in moving into the new roles and skills that are growing as AI adoption increases.
What should tech professionals do to stay relevant with AI?
For people in tech, the message is straightforward: adapt now and make AI part of your skill set.
Here are practical steps you can take:
- Run a skills self-assessment: Be honest about where you stand. Can you clearly explain how you use AI tools in your current role? Could you walk through concrete examples in an interview?
- Show AI experience in your portfolio: Document how you’ve used AI for tasks like coding assistance, data analysis, content drafting, or customer support. Be ready to talk about outcomes, not just tools.
- Invest in targeted learning: Take focused courses or certifications that deepen your understanding of AI concepts and applications. These can help you both learn and signal your commitment to staying current.
- Double down on human strengths: As AI becomes more common, skills like critical thinking, data literacy, emotional intelligence, and clear communication become even more valuable. Employers are looking for people who can combine technical awareness with these human capabilities.
The professionals who will do well in an AI-enabled workplace are those who actively invest in learning, can articulate the value they bring, and are comfortable working side by side with AI tools.
How can employees and leaders build AI skills without feeling overwhelmed?
You don’t need to master every AI tool. You do need a manageable, consistent approach to learning and adoption.
For individual employees:
- Set a small weekly learning habit: Dedicate a modest, regular block of time to AI—enough to make progress without derailing your day.
- Use micro-learning formats: Short programs such as 30-day courses or bite-sized modules work well for busy schedules. Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and IBM offer accessible AI courses.
- Stay informed with curated updates: Newsletters such as The Rundown AI and TLDR AI can keep you current on new developments without requiring hours of research.
- Start with routine tasks: Identify everyday work—drafting emails, doing research, preparing reports—where AI can help. Practice writing clear prompts and treat AI as a thought partner for brainstorming, refining drafts, and exploring options.
- Experiment with workflows: Connect tasks into simple AI-supported workflows (e.g., research → outline → draft → summary) to steadily increase productivity.
For leaders and managers:
- Acknowledge limits: Recognize that there is a practical limit to how much new information and how many tools people can absorb. Set realistic expectations.
- Model curiosity: Show that you are learning too. When leaders are open and curious, it lowers anxiety and encourages experimentation.
- Learn as a team: Have team members explore specific AI use cases and share what they find. This collaborative approach reduces uncertainty, builds confidence, and strengthens teamwork.
- Create a safe environment for experimentation: Encourage pilots and small tests rather than demanding immediate, large-scale transformation.
Handled this way, AI becomes a shared learning journey rather than a source of constant pressure, helping both individuals and teams reimagine how they work over time.
